Codman Academy Creates Safe, Wide-Reaching Academic Environment

An early investor with Lululemon Athletica, RoAnn Costin is managing director and founder of Wilderness Point Investments. Having spent years on the boards of several public and private companies, she loves sharing her experience with others. One of RoAnn Costin’s current non-profit affiliations is as a member of the Codman Academy Charter Public School's board of directors.

Codman Academy Charter Public School educates the whole student and builds a school that fuels the development of the body, mind, and character. This includes the institution’s trauma-informed approach to school design. This approach supports all staff and children who are dealing with trauma-related stress. All of the institution’s teachers understand childhood trauma research and work with coaches regularly. Meanwhile, the buildings have slightly curved corridors and neutral colors and incorporate natural elements in the dining hall that signify a safe school.

Codman was also founded on the idea of educating students beyond the four walls of a classroom, so it incorporates aspects that go beyond traditional learning environments. Students at the institution participate in world-based activities, like joining protests in Washington, DC, or delivering hand-written cards for the President of the United States that let them use what they’ve learned in real-world situations.
